Love in The Church! - 1 Corinthians 12:12-13
📖 Scripture:
“The body is a unit, though it is composed of many parts. And although its parts are many, they all form one body. So it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free, and we were all given one Spirit to drink.”
– 1 Corinthians 12:12–13

🔎 Examination:
The BIBLE demolishes every argument, pretension, and lie that tells us we can be solitary Christians. Salvation isn’t just about me and Jesus off on a spiritual honeymoon somewhere. If we truly are in Christ, we’re part of His Body—the Church. The Apostle Paul doesn’t give us the option to treat church like a club or a side gig. If we’ve truly been born again, we’re joined to Christ and to His people. That isn't a a suggestion; it's reality.

When Paul says “one body,” he’s not being poetic. If the Holy Spirit has made anyone alive, He’s also made them part of a living, breathing Body. Church isn’t some add-on for the super spiritual. It’s the proof that we actually belong to King Jesus. If we’re truly reborn and alive in Christ, we’ll be devoted to Him and to His people. Someone might bring up the repentant thief on the cross. The difference is, he had no opportunity, post-repentance... you and I do.
This annihilates the myth of spiritual independence. Our culture worships the idea of doing our own thing; God calls that rebellion. The idea that we can follow Jesus and that His sacrifice guarantees our salvation without being locked in with a real, local church isn’t just childish—it’s flat-out heresy. It spits in the face of what Christ died for (Eph 5:25-27) and mocks how He sanctifies His one and only Bride.
The Bible doesn't give anyone permission to sit on the sidelines. The Church isn’t a show where we watch from the front row or cheap seats. Every single part of the BODY matters. There’s no such thing as an ungifted, useless spectator Christian. If we’re not devoted to and actively serving in a local church, we’re not just missing out—we’re stuck in some fantasy of sinful delusion. Holding back isn’t humility. It’s spiritual desertion and dysfunction, which always leads to death (Acts 5:1-11).
The Holy Spirit doesn’t fill people up so we can fly solo. He builds Christ's Body. That’s who God is—perfect unity in perfect relationship. If we claim to have faith but refuse to commit to real relationships in the Church, we’re lying to ourselves. That’s not the faith God gives. That’s a cheap knockoff. And just because many buy into the lie... consensus doesn't make it true.
If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. -1 John 4:20
This blows the cover off fake, self-serving, program-oriented, production-based religion. Far too many treat church like a show or a spiritual vending machine. But God calls the Church His house, His Bride, and the pillar of divine truth. If we treat church like it’s optional or casual, we’re not just missing the point—we’re insulting Christ Himself; we're bearing His holy name in emptiness.
The cost of ignorance is death. Cut off a limb, and it dies. It's the same with so-called Christians who try to go it alone. What most people call ‘personal faith’ is nothing more than spiritual self-deception. It’s wanting the perks of RELATIONSHIP without bowing to Christ’s design... it's seeing Jesus as a spiritual booty-call.
This isn’t God trying to crush us under the weight of religious burdens. The TRUTH is a gift; participating in God's mission is a privilege. Inside the Church, the Holy Spirit uses biblical preaching, brotherly love, correction, and devotion to conform us more and more into the image and likeness of Jesus. Noting grows in a spiritual vacuum. God grows us through His people... iron sharpens iron.
The question, then, is not whether the Church is necessary, or even if we should GO to church. The question is whether we will submit to BEING the church. The real question isn’t, ‘Do I need church?’ The question is, ‘Will I submit to what God’s word says?’ Real faith doesn’t keep a safe distance. It shows up, gets involved, and stays accountable—because it’s alive in Christ! Are you a member of that? (1 Cor 12:27) Are we functioning as a committed, accountable members or sticking to our guns as autonomous, independent, delusional, and detached... on the wide path that leads to destruction?
🤺 Action:
- Examine your view of church – “Let us not neglect meeting together…” (Heb 10:25) Do you treat the Church as essential or optional?
- Reject passive Christianity – “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve one another.” (1 Pet 4:10) Are you actively serving, or merely attending?
- Evaluate relational unity – “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.” (Eph 4:3) Are you pursuing genuine, sacrificial relationships within the Body?
- Submit to God’s design – “God arranged the members of the body, every one of them, according to His design.” (1 Cor 12:18) Are you resisting or embracing your role?
🧠Reflection:
If you’re TRULY in Christ, you’re stuck to His Body. That’s not losing yourself—it’s finally finding the purpose God had for you all along. Church isn’t some accessory you tack onto your personal belief system or worldview. Devotion to a local church is the proof you’re alive in Jesus. Stop believing the lie of religious independence. Step into the reality of the revealed WORD: Christ is the Head, and we’re joined together for His everlasting glory.

✝️ Study:
Q1: What does Paul say happens to those who are baptized by one Spirit in 1 Corinthians 12:13?
Q2: Why does Paul use the human body as an illustration for the Church?
Q3: How does union with Christ necessarily produce union with His Body?
Q4: How does Trinitarian theology inform Paul’s understanding of ecclesial unity in this passage?
Q5: Why is the idea “I can follow Jesus without being committed to a church” incompatible with biblical teaching?
