Compelling Myths: Deadly Lies We Believe & Tell - 2 Peter 1:16
📖 Scripture:
“For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.”
– 2 Peter 1:16

🔎 Examination:
Peter isn’t playing games. He draws a line in the sand. The Gospel isn’t some fairy tale, emotional hype, or clever human philosophy. It’s not a story the Apostles made up to get a crowd or make people feel better about themselves. They didn’t invent a religion—they told the truth about what they saw, heard, and experienced first hand. They staked everything, including their very lives, on the real, living, crucified, and risen King Jesus.

They staked everything, including their very lives, on the real, living, crucified, and risen King Jesus.
There’s God’s truth/reality, and then there’s man’s myths/fantasies. Ever since the serpent whispered, “You’ll be like God,” people have created and chased stories that let them believe they are in charge. These lies haven’t disappeared—they just dress up in church clothes now. Prosperity gospel, private spirituality, self-made identity—all variations of the same poison from the same root. It’s all rebellion against God’s authority, plain and simple.
The Apostle Peter isn’t promoting feelings or private experiences. He’s talking about facts. Christianity stands or falls on what actually happened—on the reality of Christ. The Transfiguration wasn’t a vision or a metaphor. It was a sneak peek at the glory of the eternal Son, confirmed by the Father Himself. This isn’t spiritual symbolism. It’s history. It’s truth that we, like Peter, can stake our lives on.
Since the Gospel is real, we can’t keep our faith private or theoretical. Since Jesus is Lord, we don’t get to be Lone Ranger Christians. Real union with Christ means we’re part of His Body, living and active among His people. There’s NO SUCH THING as solo Christianity in the Bible. Anyone claiming Christ but rejecting His Church, they’re fooling themself. That’s not salvation. That’s self-deception bubbling up from a heart that loves darkness rather than the LIGHT of God's word.
We shouldn't be surprised that “cleverly devised myths” are everywhere, especially in churches, today. Jesus, Paul, and Peter all said it would happen—people would chase after and surround themselves with teachers (prophets, apostles, bishops, pastors, and Ph.Ds.) who tell them exactly what they want to hear. Why? Because they want sin to affirmed. They want to ignore repentance. They want assurances they are on the right track. They want someone to tell them it is perfectly acceptable to put ourselves on the throne. The end result? Eternal separation from God. The modern church is made up of crowds who want to be entertained, maybe even moved, but never changed. No repentance. No newness of life.
The real Gospel doesn’t coddle our egos—it crushes them in our sinful pride. It calls us to repent, to surrender, to obey—not because we’re trying to earn something, but because we’ve been made new. If we’re truly united to Christ, we start to look like and act like Him. We’ll crave gathering with His people, growing in the Word, giving our lives sacrificially in the church, and we will go on mission every day of our lives. That’s what being BORN AGAIN looks like.
The real question isn’t, “Are there myths out there?” Of course there are. The question is, will you bow to the truth or bend it to fit your dark fantasy? The Apostles didn’t die for a lie or a nice idea—they died because they knew the resurrected LORD, Christ Jesus, is reality. There’s no fence to sit on. There is no third category. The Gospel demands our whole life. If we aren't making every effort to be partakers in the divine nature... Christ's witnesses to the ends of the earth... whatever we say we believe is nothing more than a cleverly devised myth. We're telling King Jesus that the advancement of the GOSPEL isn’t worth our time, commitment, and devotion.
Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you workers of lawlessness!’ - King Jesus
🤺 Action:
- Test the source of your faith – “Test all things; hold fast to what is good.” (1 Thess 5:21) Is your understanding of Christ grounded in Scripture or shaped by cultural narratives and personal preference?
- Examine your submission to truth – “Why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ but not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46) Does your life reflect obedience to Christ’s authority or selective agreement?
- Reject autonomy as deception – “Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Prov 3:5) Where are you elevating your reasoning above God’s Word?
- Evaluate your connection to the Body – “Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a member of it.” (1 Cor 12:27) Are you actively functioning within a local church as a devoted member?
- Discern fruit, not appearance – “By their fruit you will recognize them.” (Matt 7:16) Does your life demonstrate transformation by the Holy Spirit or mere religious activity?
🧠Reflection:
The Gospel isn’t a collectors item to be admired from a safe distance... handled with gloves... or kept in a protective shell . It’s a reality we step into, wrestle with, and go into battle alongside. Christ’s eternal divine majesty isn’t hyperbole or metaphor—it’s the bedrock of all truth/reality. To follow King Jesus, IMMANUEL, we have to ditch every other story and bow to His Word. The world’s myths about freedom are Satan's lies—they chain us up in the prison of our own darkness. Real freedom is only found in Christ Jesus. The evidence of that freedom doesn't come from private spirituality or religious volunteerism, but being conformed into His image as we give ourselves away to build up His Body & Bride. Anything short of that is a cleverly contrived myth bubbling up from a deceitful heart that despises God.
