Slander You For It! - 1 Peter 4:4-5
📖 Scripture:
“They think it strange that you're not running with them into the same flood of wanton debauchery, and they slander you for it! But they will have to give an account to Him who stands ready to judge the living and the dead.”
1 Peter 4:4–5
🔎 Examination:
The line between the visible church and the true church has always existed.
From Cain and Abel, to Jacob and Esau, to wheat and tares, Scripture consistently distinguishes between those who merely bear the covenant name externally and those who possess covenant life internally. King Jesus makes this distinction unmistakable in Matthew 7:21. Verbal profession and religious externals are not the same as obedient faith. Religious vocabulary, symbols, even belief... none of it authenticates supernatural regeneration by the Holy Spirit. Obedience to the WORD does.
Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of My Father in heaven.
The LORD's declaration dismantles the common objection raised by pseudo-Christians and skeptics alike: “What about the corrupt pastors? What about abusive priests? What about the manipulators and hypocrites?” The exposure of false shepherds, hypocrites, and counterfeits doesn't weaken Christ’s claims. It CONFIRMS them.
The 3rd Commandment, Thou shalt not bear My name in emptiness, exposes all the fakers, counterfeits, posers, frauds, and impostors. King Jesus never taught that ALL who bear His name, attend church, participate in Bible studies, stand in pulpits, make professions of faith, or get baptized actually belong to Him. In fact, He taught quite the opposite!
The LORD warned repeatedly about wolves (identity) in sheep’s clothing (external appearance). He foretold of false prophets, false teachers, and false apostles. He described tares/weeds growing among wheat until the final harvest/judgment. The WORD exposes progressive, lukewarm, pseudo-church INSTITUTIONS that welcome these wolves to creep in unnoticed (Jude 1:4; Rev 3:16), spreading the doctrines of demons... while simultaneously exposing the PEOPLE masquerading as servants of righteousness (2 Cor 11:15). The presence of predators, parasites, and pretenders in clerical roles and robes does NOT invalidate Christianity; it fulfills Christ’s warnings about counterfeits, the suppression of truth, and lovers of darkness.
Pseudo-Christians are not misguided saints struggling toward holiness. They are pretenders without possession—religious in language, unregenerate in nature. These wolves are rampant in pseudo-Christian culture today. They write books and songs about Jesus, not the Jesus of Scripture, but of their own making and experience... and when the world is unkind (Jesus said it would be)... when the Refiner's Fire exposes them... they claim a "crisis of faith."
There is no such thing. There is divine correction. There is loving rebuke from the WORD of God. There is the call to deny self, pick up our cross and follow... but faith is a gift from above, and the ONE who began a good work in you PROMISES to see it through to completion. There is an ESSENTIAL caveat/condition often overlooked... partnership in the ministry of the GOSPEL. Not to earn salvation, but to validate authentic regeneration. That's the testimony of Scripture:
...because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
Scripture categorizes false preachers, pastors, priests, and religious types NOT as erring but as spiritual counterfeits. John writes They went out from us, but they did not belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. But their departure made it clear that none of them belonged to us. When personal demands and expectations aren't met... the departure of posers exposes their false identity.
The argument that “Christian leaders sin, therefore Christianity is false” is a fallacy. It collapses under both logic and biblical clarity. There are corrupt doctors, police, teachers, lawyers, judges, politicians, mail carriers, government officials, and business owners. But how many people maintain the same consistent standard across the board?
How many people refuse to call 911 because there are corrupt police officers? How many people refuse to go to the emergency room because of Jack Kevorkian and Christopher Duntsch (Dr. Death)? How many people empty out their investment portfolios because guys like Bernie Madoff exist? The Lord declared that many who perform visible ministry—even miracles—will hear, “I never knew you.” Not “I knew you once.” Not “You were Mine and lost it.” But “I never knew you.” The book of Revelation warns against being enticed and intoxicated by power, signs, and miracles... those things will be used by the Antichrist and Beast to lead the whole world astray! We now have the full revelation of the WORD of God!
Those who love the darkness intentionally masquerade as servants of righteousness. What better way to discredit Christ and the true church? People who point to corruption within so-called churches are pointing to posers, counterfeits, scoundrels, and wolves. They typically fall into one of the following pseudo-church cults, movements, or sects:
- Oneness / Modalist Groups
- Core error: Reject the eternal distinction of Father, Son, and Spirit; teach that God merely “manifests” in modes.
- Why it matters: Denies the eternal Sonship of Christ (John 1:1–2; 17:5) and collapses the Godhead into a single person.
- Examples: United Pentecostal Church International, Various independent “Jesus Only” assemblies
- Liberal / Mainline Theological Modernism:
- Core error: Subordinates Scripture to higher criticism, cultural ethics, and evolving social ideology; often denies inerrancy, penal substitution, exclusivity of Christ, and bodily resurrection.
- Examples: United Church of Christ, The Episcopal Church, Presbyterian Church (USA), Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), American Baptist Churches USA, United Methodist Church, Disciples of Christ, Reformed Church in America, Friends General Conference, Moravian Church in America, United Church of Canada, etc.
- Word-Faith / Manifest Sons / “Little gods” Theology (distinct from basic prosperity branding)
- Core error: Teaches that believers share in Christ’s divine nature in an ontological sense, can “speak reality into existence,” or are functionally divine.
- Influential teachers: Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Paula White, Benny Hinn, Jesse Duplantis, Joyce Meyer, T.D. Jakes, et al.
- Often overlaps with prosperity circles but includes distinct metaphysical claims about deification and creative speech.
- RED FLAG Buzz Words & Phrases: Seed Money, Activate your Faith, Positive Confession, Decree and Declare, Speak into Existence, Financial Breakthrough, Claim your Healing, Creative Power in Your Mouth, Impartation, Mantle Transfer, Season of Overflow, Supernatural Acceleration...
- Hyper-Grace / Antinomian Movements
- Core error: Claims that repentance, confession of sin, and ongoing obedience are unnecessary because all sins (past/future) are automatically forgiven without relational consequence.
- Why it matters: Undermines 1 John 1:9; Rom 6:1–2; Titus 2:11–14.
- Often internet-based, loosely organized, personality-driven.
- Evangelical Conditionalism / Annihilationist Revisionism
- Core error: Reinterprets final judgment to mean the wicked are ultimately annihilated/destroyed (cease to exist) rather than experiencing eternal conscious punishment/torment.
- Why it matters: 1) The same adjective (aiōnios) describes both punishment and life. If one is everlasting in duration, the parallel naturally suggests the other is as well. 2) Scripture describes a bodily resurrection “to judgment” (John 5:29; Acts 24:15). If the lost are raised bodily, the question becomes: raised for what duration? 3) Imagery of Ongoing Conscious Judgment. Revelation 14:11 and 20:10 describe torment “forever and ever” with no rest day or night. Conditionalists argue this language is symbolic. 4) Historic Consensus - eternal conscious punishment has been the dominant view in Augustinian, medieval, Reformation, and post-Reformation orthodoxy. While consensus is not infallible, overturning it requires substantial exegetical weight. 5) The Doctrine of God’s Justice - The debate ultimately touches divine holiness, proportionality of judgment, and the gravity of sin against an infinite God.
- Influential Teachers: Kirk Cameron, Edward Fudge, John Stott, Clark Pinnock, and Preston Sprinkle
- Hyper-Dispensational / Ultra-Rightly Dividing Groups
- Core error: Radically partitions Scripture so that large portions (e.g., the Gospels) are said not to apply to the Church.
- Why it matters: Fractures the unity of redemptive history and often distorts the gospel itself. Common in small independent assemblies and online ministries.
- Sacred-Name / Hebrew Roots Legalism (Judaizing Revivalism)
- Core error: Insists Christians must keep Mosaic ceremonial law (Sabbath, dietary codes, feasts) to remain faithful; sometimes denies the Trinity or penal substitution.
- Why it matters: Rebuilds what Christ fulfilled (Gal 2–5; Col 2:16–17). Often blends fringe linguistics, conspiracy claims, and selective Torah observance.
- Christian Science / Metaphysical Idealism
- Core error: Denies material reality of sin, sickness, sometimes even matter itself; redefines Christ as principle rather than incarnate Son. Rejects orthodox Christology and substitutionary atonement.
- Unitarian / Socinian / Arian Revivals (Non-Trinitarian but “Christian”)
- Core error: Affirms Jesus as teacher or exalted creature, denies His eternal deity. Modern forms often dissolve core doctrines into pluralism.
- Example: Unitarian Universalist Association
- Progressive / Emergent Church Movement
- Core error: Recasts doctrine as narrative exploration; relativizes biblical sexual ethics; treats substitutionary atonement as “cosmic child abuse” (a phrase popularized in emergent debates). Frequently denies exclusivity of Christ (John 14:6; Acts 4:12).
- While diverse, recurring patterns include: 1) Suspicion of inerrancy and propositional certainty, 2) Reframing or rejecting penal substitution, 3) Openness to pluralism or inclusivism, 4) Ethical revisionism regarding sexuality, 5) Emphasis on narrative, mystery, and deconstruction over confessional clarity
- Notable figures: Brian McLaren, Rob Bell, Doug Pagitt, Tony Jones, Peter Rollins, Brian Zahnd, Rachel Held Evans, Richard Rohr, William P. Young, Shane Claiborne, Nadia Bolz-Weber
- Cults of Personality / Apostolic Authoritarian Micro-Sects
- Core error: A self-appointed “apostle” or prophet claims unique revelation; members are discouraged from testing doctrine; significant financial and relational control structures.
- Biblical test: Acts 17:11; 2 Cor 11:13–15; 1 Tim 3.
- Often small, independent, rapidly multiplying through media.
- Black Hebrew Israelite and Identity Theologies
- Core error: Ethnic redefinition of Israel; often legalistic, sometimes denying full deity of Christ or teaching works-based righteousness.
- Highly fragmented but evangelistically aggressive in public spaces.
- Universalist / Inclusivist Churches
- Core error: All will ultimately be saved; hell is metaphorical or temporary; repentance and faith are not strictly necessary.
- Why it matters: Contradicts Matt 25:46; Rev 20:11–15.
Pointing to counterfeits doesn't invalidate Christ, His word, or His Church. Rather, it serves as a witness to their truth and veracity. Choosing to leverage dysfunctional, heretical, pseudo-Christians and pseudo-churches to justify the rejection of Christ is something King Jesus foretold: “And this is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the Light; for their deeds were evil.”
Peter’s words in 1 Peter 4:4-5 sharpen the contrast. True saints no longer run in the same flood of dissipation because we've already wasted enough time in the muck of our former lives. There is a marked divergence. The regenerate life is increasingly separated from debauchery, not to parade moral superiority but because new affections replace old appetites. That's called SANCTIFICATION.
Pseudo-Christians interpret this separation as moral superiority and judgmentalism. They call fidelity to Christ “rigidity.” They label obedience “intolerance.” Like crabs in a barrel, they not only find it strange that devout saints refuse to plunge back into sexual immorality, theological compromise, doctrinal revisionism, and celebratory sin... they make every effort to pull us back into their debauchery, rebellion, and idolatry. And when our refusal persists... slander follows. Peter adds a sobering reminder: they will give an account.
The modern church landscape is filled with congregations that retain Christian externals and vocabulary while redefining them. Scripture’s inerrancy is questioned and overruled. God’s sovereignty is softened and surrendered. The sufficiency of the WORD is replaced with therapeutic or political frameworks. Sin is renamed authenticity. Repentance is reframed as unnecessary repression. Affirmation of debauchery becomes the highest virtue. Applause is offered where Scripture commands mourning and surrender.
These communities often display aesthetic rebellion—performative irreverence, symbolic distortions, and ideological spectacles presented as prophetic courage. They congratulate themselves for “progress,” while effectively severing themselves from the authority of the KING they claim to honor.
This isn't new. The Apostle Paul warned Timothy of those who would accumulate teachers to suit their own passions. Jude described intruders who pervert grace into sensuality. The trajectory is ancient: detach grace from holiness and the descent accelerates. That's precisely what's going on in progressive, woke, liberal, pseudo-churches everywhere today.
Atheists and agnostics frequently point to scandals among clergy as evidence that religion is meaningless. Snide comments, such as “Where was God on that one?” are testimony against themselves. The very existence of such scandals by THEIR brothers and sisters (not ours) proves the biblical diagnosis of the human heart... deceitful above ALL things! Depravity is not disproven by sin and hypocrisy; it's highlighted by it.
The crucial distinction lies here: true saints don't defend sin; they confess and forsake it. They don't reinterpret Scripture to shield corruption; they submit to it even when it exposes them. The WORD functions as both wall and weapon—guarding the church from external threats and internal compromise.
When false shepherds are unmasked as abusers, liars, or predators, they stand not as representatives of faithful Christianity but as vivid illustrations of Matthew 7. Their exposure is a preview of the final judgment. It validates Christ’s warning that proximity to ministry doesn't equate to union with Him... joyful obedience does. King Jesus made it crystal clear, If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Meanwhile, those who cling to Scripture’s authority and refuse to revise its moral clarity are increasingly portrayed as legalistic, regressive, unkind, and unloving. Yet Peter explains this reaction precisely: separation from our former ways always provokes hostility. The contrast itself becomes an indictment.
The world—and its religious imitations—prefers blurred, ambiguous, and subjective boundaries. But Scripture insists on objective differentiation. Light and darkness. Wheat and tares. Sheep and goats. Pretenders and possessors. There is no grey area or third category.
Pseudo-Christianity seeks to dissolve those categories. It attacks and erodes distinction and celebrates ambiguity (e.g., gender ideology). It treats doctrinal clarity (women can't be pastors/elders) as hate speech and moral absolutes (homosexuality is sin) as oppression. But when Scripture is stripped of its authority... their desire is to reduce Jesus to a religious mascot rather than Alpha and Omega, KING of kings, and LORD of lords.
Jesus ties salvation to doing the will of the Father—not as a meritorious work, random acts of kindness, human philanthropy, or whatever people see fit to do in their own eyes. The will of the Father is objective as the GOOD fruit of supernatural regeneration. Obedience doesn't purchase grace; it validates its presence. A transformed heart inevitably produces a transformed trajectory.
Those who compromise the authority of Scripture while claiming Christ’s name (bearing the LORD's name in emptiness) construct an idolatrous religion and an idolatrous Jesus - one made in their image rather than the other way around. They may retain liturgical forms, religious language, sacraments, ceremonies, traditions, and activist energy, but without submission to the WORD. Therefore, the whole structure is built without a foundation.
“But everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, the torrents raged, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its collapse!”
Peter’s warning that detractors and blasphemers “will give an account” reframes the entire narrative. The faithful church need not defend itself against slander for doing KALOS (the will of the Father). These very accusations serve as testimony to holiness and obedience. When the saints refuse to participate in moral chaos, our restraint serves as a living witness (Acts 1:8).
In the end, pseudo-Christians who mocked doctrinal fidelity will testify—by contrast—to our faithfulness and authenticity. Their caricaturization of us as evildoers (1 Peter 2:12) will highlight the difference between cultural religion and true covenant life. What they label as “narrowness” will be revealed as walking by faith. What they call “progress” will be exposed as the filthy rags of self-righteousness.
The true church doesn't respond to worldly corruption by lowering divine standards. It rebukes it by staying faithful to the unchanging WORD. The exposure of wolves demands vigilance, not revision and affirmation. Faithfulness requires elders who tremble at Scripture, congregations who treasure holiness, and saints who endure slander without retaliation.
Christ’s declaration remains immovable: not everyone who says “Lord, Lord!” belongs to Him.
That immutable truth points to the integrity of the Gospel. It explains the presence of predators in pulpits. It clarifies why many claiming Christ simultaneously champion what Scripture condemns. And it assures the saints that vengeance and vindication rest with the Judge.
The Word stands as wall and weapon—defending the church from doctrinal erosion and cutting through deception. Those who truly live under its authority will NOT be indistinguishable from the surrounding culture. Instead, we are marked by adoration, repentance, submission, perseverance, and reverent joy... not running into debauchery.
When their accusations arise, the true church remembers Peter’s promise: those who slander you will give an account. Our faithfulness, though maligned now, will soon be vindicated by the JUDGE... the eternal WORD of God!
🤺 Action:
-
Examine profession against obedience to God's WORD – Does your life as a devoted member of the Body & Bride of Christ reflect total, supernatural, and joyful submission to the Father’s will or casual attendance and a consumer mentality (Matt 7:21)? Who have you shared the GOSPEL with in the past week? How are you tangibly and actively gathering with Christ versus scattering?
-
Strengthen doctrinal walls – Ensure you are part of a local church that upholds the sovereignty and supremacy of God's WORD, prioritizes expository preaching, practices biblical discipline, and maintains accountable membership (not just leadership).
-
Endure slander patiently – Trust the coming judgment of Christ Jesus rather than seeking immediate vindication with quick comebacks and witty retorts.
🧠 Reflection:
The existence of counterfeit currency doesn't abolish real money; it proves that something genuine is worth imitating. So it is with the TRUE church. When pseudo-Christians and so-called churches distort grace, mock holiness, and slander obedience, they echo the very pattern Scripture foretold. Their divergence clarifies the line. Their accusations highlight the contrast.
Not everyone who says, “Lord, Lord.” But those who live for Christ, His WORD, and the advancement of His kingdom under the authority of His Word—guarded by it, armed with it, shaped by it—we stand secure when every profession is measured, tested, examined, and judged. On that day, every account will be settled before the KING. Where do you stand?
