Shhhhhh! Do Not Bear My Name in Emptiness - Matthew 16:15-16, 20

📖 Scripture:

“He said to them, ‘But who do you say I am?’ Simon Peter replied, ‘You are the Christ, the Son of the living God… Then He admonished the disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.’” – Matthew 16:15–16; 20

🔎 Examination:

King Jesus posed a question in Matthew 16 that wasn’t just for those physically present. It is the most IMPORTANT question ever posed to humanity, for it is asked by our Creator… the eternal WORD… the One who will judge the living and the dead. The question is neither rhetorical, intellectual, nor philosophical. It’s not an invitation for speculation, subjective interpretation, or personal opinion. It demands SUPERNATURAL awareness of DIVINE revelation that escapes ALL humanity… yet, we ALL answer. SHEEP answer by God’s grace through faith in Christ according to Scripture with steadfast allegiance, unyielding devotion, godly repentance, and Spirit-empowered fruit/obedience. GOATS answer with ongoing rebellion, atheism, agnosticism, world religions, and false Christianities. The QUESTION posited by King Jesus is this: “Who do YOU say I am?”

Peter’s confession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God,” while technically accurate, as it was divine revelation, was insufficient. It wasn’t Peter’s response, but God's through him... just as the LORD caused Balaam’s donkey to speak in Numbers 22:21-39. King Jesus immediately clarifies that flesh and blood did not reveal this truth to Peter. Human intellect, intuition, or religious tradition cannot produce the right answer. But even when God chooses to use unregenerate instruments to communicate divine revelation, the WARNING is to never go beyond what God's WORD reveals. King Jesus was still a long way from the Cross… the tomb… and the resurrection. The disciples were still a LONG WAY from Pentecost, and it’s sanctifying regeneration… so King Jesus told them not to tell anyone that He was the Christ.

This is CRITICAL because many “self-identifying” Christians today speak confidently of a make-believe Jesus of religious fairytales and myth. These depraved cultists believe things about Him that exist nowhere in Scripture. They misquote His words while claiming to do works, missions, and ministry in His name. The catastrophic danger King Jesus confronts in admonishing the UNREGENERATE to silence is not their ignorance, but false assurance. It is one thing to be silent about Jesus; it is quite another to BLATANTLY misrepresent the true Christ by bearing His name in emptiness. The modern religious landscape is filled with people, groups, cults, denominations, and traditions that “believe” in Jesus while simultaneously rejecting His WORD and supremely authoritative, denying His eternal divinity, exclusivity, and impeccability, and redefining Him, His mission, His WORD, and His Bride according to personal preference, cultural collapse, and ideological pressure.

Christ doesn’t ask, “Who do PEOPLE say that I am?” in ignorance, insecurity, or curiosity. He asks to EXPOSE the vast gulf between cultural opinion and covenantal allegiance. The disciples relayed the popular cultural consensus: prophet, righteous teacher, spiritual influencer. But King Jesus refused to leave them in the safety of public opinion. “But who do YOU say I am?” is the eternal dividing line that dismantles the notion of neutrality. Simon Peter’s hubris was on display for having the right answer… quickly admonished to say nothing… then followed by the harsh rebuke from the ONE he identified as Messiah, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men.”

Sunday's SERMON rightly exposed the danger of thinking that correct answers equate to salvation. Peter’s confession was correct, yet before Pentecost, he still doubted… still fled like a coward when things got tough… and then denied even knowing Jesus... three times! Accurate theology without Spirit-wrought regeneration saves no one. The RESURRECTED and ASCENDED Christ doesn’t merely inform minds; He resurrects dead sinners. Regeneration produces entirely new affections, new loyalties, new desires, and a whole new baptism/identity. The person who merely admires or even worships some manufactured Jesus while resisting the TRUTH of the WORD or rejecting His sovereign LORDSHIP… they remain on the wide path that leads to destruction… regardless of what they “self-identify” as.

That is why King Jesus FORBADE the disciples from proclaiming their personal perspectives regarding His identity at that moment. They may have possessed the HEAD KNOWLEDGE, but they were certainly not yet spiritually REBORN. They were not yet indwelt by the Holy Spirit. They may have confessed Him as Messiah, but they did not yet understand the cross, resurrection, or mission. A religion of correct answers without DIVINE REGENERATION is ultimately empty as a counterfeit religion with a counterfeit gospel. It produces crowds, ceremonies, and cowards… sacraments, sentimentality, and sloths… not relentless champions… not steadfast saints... not emboldened disciples... not courageous ambassadors.

Contemporary culture embraces a therapeutic, customizable, “Jesus”—a hybrid mascot of tolerance, inclusion, self-esteem, and spiritual self-discovery. This “Jesus” requires nothing, judges no one, opposes nothing, demands no repentance, and affirms all lifestyles. He is the projection of depraved cultural desires, not the exact representation and revelation of God. Millions worship a fake “Jesus” because he costs them nothing. He is powerless, fictional, and inherently demonic. Their “Jesus” is not the NARROW WAY… he is the WIDE PATH that dead ends in a perpetual lake of unending torment.

The biblical Christ is the eternal Logos, Creator, Judge, Alpha & Omega, and High Priest whose identity is not subject to academic revision, ecclesiastical tradition, progressive reconstruction, or cultural trend. He is not a symbol of religious heritage; He is the sovereign Lord of All who commands and defines truth/reality. His identity is fixed: fully God, eternally begotten, incarnate, crucified, risen, enthroned, returning. Every knee will bow not to some “Jesus” of personal imagination, but to the Christ of Scripture.

Therefore, the question “Who do you say I am?” is not an invitation to artistic self-expression; it is a verdict of self-imposed judgment. Every answer that deviates from the biblical revelation is blasphemy. Every refusal to submit to THE INERRENT WORD is high treason. Every attempt to redefine Him is idolatry. The modern obsession with theological pluralism, interfaith collaboration, and spiritual relativism is a direct rejection of Christ’s identity according to Christ. King Jesus doesn’t merely tolerate disagreement; He condemns and punishes it.

Scripture commands His saints to expose false religion, reject false teachers, and contend earnestly for the faith delivered once for all to the elect. That is not harshness; it is love. It protects the Bride, honors the King, and rescues the deceived. King Jesus Himself warns that many will come in His name, preaching different gospels, and many will follow them:

Roman Catholic Popes; Joseph Smith, Mormonism; Brigham Young, Mormonism; Charles Taze Russell, Jehovah’s Witnesses; Joseph Franklin Rutherford, Jehovah’s Witnesses; Mary Baker Eddy, Christian Science; Ellen G. White, Seventh-day Adventism; Herbert W. Armstrong, Worldwide Church of God/Armstrongism; Victor Paul Wierwille, The Way International; Sun Myung Moon, Unification Church; David Berg, Children of God/The Family; William Branham, Latter Rain/Healing Revival; Frank Ewart, Oneness Pentecostalism; David K. Bernard, Oneness Pentecostalism; E. W. Kenyon, Word of Faith; Kenneth E. Hagin Sr., Word of Faith; Kenneth Copeland, Word of Faith; Benny Hinn, Word of Faith; Creflo Dollar, Word of Faith; Joel Osteen, Prosperity Gospel; C. Peter Wagner, New Apostolic Reformation; Bill Johnson, Bethel/NAR; Mike Bickle, IHOPKC/NAR; Rick Joyner, Morningstar/NAR; Cindy Jacobs, NAR; Chuck Pierce, NAR; Lou Engle, NAR; Todd Bentley, NAR; Lance Wallnau, NAR/7 Mountain; Bob Jones, Kansas City Prophets; Paul Cain, Kansas City Prophets; David Koresh, Branch Davidians; Jim Jones, Peoples Temple

The LORD warned that false prophets will look like sheep… and even shepherds, but their goal is to devour the flock. Christ warns that the VAST MAJORITY will be self-deceived, religious warriors, social justice activists, confident volunteers—all condemned.

On the Day of Judgment, theological knowledge, religious involvement, and emotional sincerity will not matter. The ONE question will stand: “Who do you say I am?” Many will answer with correct doctrine: “Lord, Lord!” Many will appeal to ministry accomplishments: prophecy, exorcism, miracles, activism, philanthropy, “But didn’t we?” King Jesus won’t deny anyone based on doctrinal accuracy or religious activity. He will deny based EXCLUSIVELY on baptism/identity, responding, “I never knew you.”

Sunday’s SERMON emphasized that salvation is not a reward for obedience, merit, or worthiness. It is wholly a work of God resulting from supernatural regeneration and union. One cannot “try harder” to become a child of God. The ELECT are foreknown, predestined, and supernaturally born into the Kingdom. One cannot accumulate sufficient self-righteousness for entrance. One must possess the righteousness of the ULTIMATE HERO, Christ Jesus—imputed, perfect, infinite. One cannot “believe hard enough” to compensate for rebellion; it is only in our death to self, our welcoming crucifixion with Christ, that we are raised to do the GOOD WORKS God prepared in advance for us to walk in as our new way of life. King Jesus’ resurrected life becomes ours.

Therefore, the right answer must come from the right SOURCE (the Holy Spirit), the right IDENTITY (in Christ), and the right FRUIT of that union (greater works than these)! “You are the Christ” is only LEGITIMATE when spoken by one who has died and been raised with Him. Regeneration produces confession. Confession does not produce regeneration. The elect confess not to impress God, but because God has impressed His truth upon our souls, and we CANNOT contain it.

The TEST is not whether we can recite a creed, confession, or even Scripture. The TEST is whether our lives are truly submitted, 100%, to the resurrected and returning King. It’s not about Bible Trivia, but whether the SINFUL HEART has been conquered and exchanged. Who do you say He is today—in thought, word, habit, affection, adoration, allegiance, sacrifice, surrender, and mission? Modern Christianity answers with sentimentality; biblical Christianity answers with surrender.

The TRUE Christ is returning, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation EXCLUSIVELY to those eagerly awaiting Him. Not everyone waiting has a lamp filled with the righteousness of Christ. Not everyone will meet the ONE they’re expecting. The world has manufactured many antichrists;  only the REAL JESUS, the GOOD NEWS, brings salvation. The question is inescapable: Who do you say He is—and is your answer evidence of regeneration according to God’s WORD… or religious speculation, tradition, and deadly presumption?

🤺 Action:

  • Test your confession – “Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith.” (2 Cor 13:5) Does your understanding of Christ Jesus align with the fullness of Scripture or a syncretistic version of religious tradition, cultural appeal, and personal opinion?

  • Expose counterfeit christs – “Test all things; hold fast to what is good.” (1 Thess 5:21) Where have you allowed cultural values to reshape your view of Christ’s TRUE identity according to Scripture?

  • Examine allegiance – “Search me, O God…” (Ps 139:23–24) Does your life reveal submission to Christ’s lordship or sentimental admiration that lines up with the full revelation of God’s WORD… or a cut & paste theology of perversion and lies?

  • Reject neutrality – “…turn back to the LORD.” (Lam 3:40) Where have you tolerated falsehood for the sake of peace rather than authentic biblical truth?

🧠 Reflection:

The question King Jesus asked His disciples remains the central, defining question of human existence… and consequence. It does not seek religious opinions but demands personal and corporate allegiance as a devoted member of His Body & Bride! His identity is not shaped by culture, emotion, or tradition, but is revealed in Scripture and sealed by His immutable character. Don’t settle for borrowed answers, sentimental reverence, or cultural generalities that feel good and tickle ears. Plead with the Holy Spirit to expose every counterfeit doctrine, false gospel, and antichrist in your mind… and by God’s providential grace, respond with a life of adoration that confesses Him as the KING of kings!
